Most people think of energy expenditure in terms of exercise: a workout, a run, a long walk, or time spent at the gym.
But a surprisingly large part of the energy we use throughout the day can come from something much less obvious — all of the movement that happens outside deliberate exercise.
This is known as NEAT — Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis.
NEAT includes the energy your body uses for everyday physical activity that is not structured exercise: walking around the house, standing instead of sitting, changing posture, moving your hands and legs, taking a few extra steps, doing household tasks, pacing while thinking, spontaneously getting up, and countless small movements that happen almost automatically.
Two people can have very similar workouts and very different total daily activity levels simply because one of them naturally moves much more throughout the rest of the day.
The idea behind this field
NEAT is an energetically programmed field created with the intention of encouraging the subconscious mind and body to naturally increase everyday movement and energy expenditure throughout the day.
Instead of relying entirely on conscious discipline — constantly reminding yourself to walk more, stand up, move around, or be more active — the field is designed to work with the automatic layer of behavior.
Its intention is to encourage the body to become less physically passive whenever movement is appropriate.
You may naturally feel more inclined to:
- stand up more often;
- walk around instead of remaining seated;
- change positions more frequently;
- move while speaking or thinking;
- take additional steps without consciously planning them;
- perform small tasks immediately instead of postponing them;
- use more natural body movement and gestures;
- choose movement over unnecessary physical inactivity;
- remain subtly more active throughout the day.
Another intention programmed into the field is to help the subconscious optimize everyday activity so that the body uses a greater amount of energy through normal daily life without requiring formal exercise for every additional calorie of expenditure.
The field works with the idea of directing the subconscious toward the highest practical level of spontaneous activity and energy expenditure that remains appropriate for the individual, their circumstances, and their current physical capacity.
